Codepage to Unicode: Precognition

While the Witch is often used to create legacy files, she is equally skilled at rescuing them. This ritual involves taking old Codepage-encoded text and "promoting" it to modern Unicode (UTF-8), making it compatible with today's desktop editors and web standards.

1. Statistical Scrying

When a legacy file is cast into the cauldron, it typically emerges with a Blue icon. Unlike Unicode files which contain clear encoding signatures, legacy files are often just raw bytes. To identify them, the Witch performs a statistical analysis of the text to "guess" its likely language and locale.

2. The Probability Pie Graphs

Because the Witch is making an educated guess, the Enchantments pane looks a little different for Blue files. You will notice Blue/Red Pie Graphs :

3. The Mirror of Promotion

The Unicode Viewer (the upper mirror) is your most important tool during this ritual. It shows you exactly what the text will look like once it has been promoted to UTF-8.

4. Finalizing the Promotion

Once the text appears correctly in the upper mirror, click the Export icon. The Witch will wrap the text in a modern UTF-8 seal, ensuring it can be read by any modern application while preserving the original line endings.

Note: If the text contains only standard 7-bit characters, the icon will turn Gray . These files are universal and require no complex scrying to promote.
